    confirmed case
    en
Definition laboratory confirmed case of a communicable disease that may or may not fulfil the clinical criteria as described in the case definition and which is classified as confirmed for epidemiological surveillance purposes Reference "COM-EN, based on: Annex II to Decision (EU) 2018/945 on the communicable diseases and related special health issues to be covered by epidemiological surveillance as well as relevant case definitions, CELEX:32018D0945/EN"
Comment "The definition of a confirmed case is highly specific and less sensitive; therefore most of the collected cases will be true cases although some will be missed. The clinical criteria of some diseases do not allude to the fact that many acute cases are asymptomatic (for example, hepatitis A, B and C, campylobacter, salmonellosis) although these cases may still be important from a public health perspective on national level. Cases of communicable diseases subject to epidemiological surveillance are classified as possible [ IATE:3504410 ], probable [ IATE:3504409 ] or confirmed. Confirmed cases fall into one of the following three subcategories: laboratory-confirmed case with clinical criteria [ IATE:3521680 ], laboratory-confirmed case with unknown clinical criteria [ IATE:3521683 ], or laboratory-confirmed case without clinical criteria [ IATE:3521685 ].
