Definition large African antelope occurring near rivers and lakes in the savannah Reference Oxford dictionaries http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/waterbuck [5.7.2011]
Comment Despite its name, the waterbuck is not truly aquatic nor as much at home in water and swamps as is the sitatunga or lechwe. It does, however, take refuge there to escape predators. African Wildlife Foundation http://www.awf.org/content/wildlife/detail/waterbuck [5.7.2011] Distribution: western, central, eastern and southern Africa. Classified as "least concern" in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as, although the species is in decline, there is no evidence so far that the scale of this decline has reached a level that would qualify the species for Near Threatened or Vulnerable status. However, if declining trends continue then the species may warrant uplisting to Near Threatened in the near or medium-term future.
