    Comment Ces carburants constituent des solutions alternatives au gaz (méthane), au diesel, à l'essence et à l'éthanol.La production du méthane de synthèse, par exemple, se déroule en deux étapes, avec d'abord l'électrolyse (d'où le «e» du terme anglais «e-fuel»): un surplus d’électricité issue de sources d’énergie renouvelable est utilisé pour décomposer l’eau en oxygène et en hydrogène. L’hydrogène, H2, est ensuite combiné à du CO2 pour lancer une réaction chimique qui produira alors du méthane de synthèse. L'évolution de la part de marché de la voiture électrique sera bien trop lente pour atteindre les objectifs de la COP21. Le moyen le plus rapide consiste à remplacer l'essence et le gazole raffinés à partir de pétrole par des carburants de synthèse produits à partir d'énergies renouvelables, mais compatibles avec les voitures thermiques actuelles, qui, dans tous les cas, ne vont pas disparaître du jour au lendemain.
