- Definition "In England and Wales, one of the offences listed in Schedule 1 of the 2007 Serious Crime Act, or an offence which ""in the particular circumstances ... the court considers to be sufficiently serious to be treated (as a serious offence) for the purposes of the application"". In Scotland, a ""serious offence"" is defined in subsection (3) of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010 as an ""an indictable offence that is committed with the intention of obtaining a material benefit, for any person or an act of violence committed, or a threat made for the purpose of obtaining such benefit at some time in the future. “Material benefit” for these purposes is a right in or interest in any property""."
