    Comment Les toutes premières lignes directrices ont été publiées en 1994. Les méthodes appliquées actuellement sont pour l'essentiel celles décrites dans les Lignes directrices 2006 du GIEC pour les inventaires nationaux de gaz à effet de serre. Ces dernières ont ensuite été complétées par une série de documents (Méthodes supplémentaires révisées et pratiques recommandées 2013 découlant du Protocole de Kyoto) et (Supplément 2013 aux Lignes directrices 2006 du GIEC pour les inventaires nationaux de gaz à effet de serre: zones humides).Les lignes directrices 2006 du GIEC ont été révisées en 2019. La Révision 2019 présente des méthodes supplémentaires pour évaluer les sources d’émission de gaz à effet de serre et les puits qui absorbent ces gaz. Elle porte également sur les lacunes scientifiques qui avaient été recensées, les nouvelles technologies et les nouveaux processus de production, ainsi que les sources et puits qui ne figuraient pas dans les Lignes directrices 2006.
