- Definition a divided attention test with specific instructions where the subject has to stand on alternate feet for a timed period of 30 seconds. During this period, the subject also has to count aloud. Certain drugs (e.g. CNS stimulants) may cause the subject to count rapidly and/or lose count. The subject stands with hands by their side, with the standing leg straight and toes pointing forward. The other leg is raised 6-8 inches above the ground, then held in position; the subject is required to look at their raised foot and count 30 seconds in 1000's. (E.g. one thousand and one, one thousand and two etc.) The exercise is repeated with the other leg raised Reference Tunbridge, Keigan & James, Recognising Drug Use and Drug Related Impairment in Drivers at the Roadside, 2000, TRL, pp.4 & 13
