Definition charge of an atom after ionic approximation of its heteronuclear bonds Reference "COM-EN, based on:IUPAC, Oxidation state (23.12.2020)"
Comment Approximating all bonds to be ionic may lead to unusual results. If the N=N bond in N2O were extrapolated to be ionic, the central nitrogen atom would have an oxidation state of +5 and the terminal one −3. To obtain less extreme values, bonds between atoms of the same element should be divided equally upon ionic approximation.
