Definition removal of most of an area of trees in a sequence of gradual cuttings, which allows for the even‐aged or two-aged regeneration of a species or group of species in the remaining partial shade Reference "COM-EN and COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:- Powell, D.C., Silvicultural Activities: Description and Terminology (23.4.2024), USDA Forest Service, 2013, p. 7.- 'shelterwood cut' (23.4.2024), Park, C., Allaby, M., A Dictionary of Environment and Conservation, Oxford University Press, 2017."
Comment Cutting may be done uniformly throughout the stand (uniform shelterwood), in groups or patches (group shelterwood), or in strips (strip shelterwood). The sequence of treatments can include two or three distinct types of cuttings: 1) an optional preparatory cut to enhance conditions for seed production; 2) an establishment cut to prepare the seed bed and to create a new age class; and 3) a removal cut to release established regeneration from competition with the overwood.
