    Definition Sammelbegriff, der eine Reihe von Fernsehnormen bezeichnet, die sich gegenüber dem herkömmlichem Fernsehen durch eine größere Zeilenzahl (720, 1050, 1080, 1125, 1200 oder 1250 Zeilen), erhöhte Auflösung und ein verändertes Bild-Seitenverhältnis (16:9) auszeichnen. HDTV kann mit den bekannten Bildwechselraten 25 Bilder pro Sekunde (PAL-System) und 30 Bilder pro Sekunde (NTSC-System), sowie der Bildwechselrate von Film (24 Bilder pro Sekunde) arbeiten. Desweiteren ist es mit HDTV möglich, progressive Bilder zu verarbeiten (z.B. sog. 24p), also Bilder, die sich nicht wie beim Zeilensprungverfahren in zwei Halbbilder teilen, sondern aus einem Vollbild bestehen.
