    TIFS | total in-flight simulator
    en
Definition cockpit simulator which can be attached to a real aircraft (in order to simulate the aircraft’s flight characteristics for the purpose of training flight-crew or researching the performance of new aircrafts’ stability, handling-qualities and flight systems) and which can be flown by the real aircraft in the real air environment, thereby improving the fidelity of the simulation activity Reference Based on information received from Dr Colin Goodchild, Senior Lecturer, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow [26.08.08]
Comment It incorporates all the systems, including flight systems, which are to be evaluated and which are coupled to the real aircraft’s systems through a computer. The idea was realised by the CALSPAN science and technology company in the US, where a modified Convair aircraft was used for various training programmes including the X15.N.B.: As this is an emerging area of simulation, the definitions may evolve.
