Les États membres des Nations unies sont répartis en cinq groupes régionaux: Afrique, Amérique latine et des Caraïbes (GRULAC), Asie, Europe Centrale et de l'Est (CEE) et Europe occidentale et autres États (WEOG). Ces groupes permettent le roulement ou la répartition équitable des postes (pour le président de l'Assemblée générale par exemple) et des sièges (pour les membres non-permanents du Conseil de sécurité par exemple).
