    Definition Häufig wird die erw. Messunsicherheit verwendet mit dem Ziel, ein Werteintervall anzugeben, das den Wert der gemessenen Größe mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit überdeckt. Die erw. Messunsicherheit ergibt sich aus der Standardmessunsicherheit durch Multiplikation mit einem Erweiterungsfaktor. Je größer dieser Faktor ist, desto größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Überdeckung bzw. desto größer ist das Vertrauen, dass der Wert der Messgröße in dem angegebenen Werteintervall liegt. Für den üblicherweise verwendeten Wert einer Überdeckungswahrscheinlichkeit von 95 %6 ist i.a. ein Erweiterungsfaktor von 2 zu verwenden. Wird zur Angabe der Unsicherheit einer Messgröße die erweiterte Messunsicherheit mitgeteilt, muß, nach allgemeiner Übereinkunft, der gewählte Erweiterungsfaktor oder die Überdeckungswahrscheinlichkeit, oder auch beides, mit angegeben werden.
