    Definition Il s’agit des quatre attributs essentiels communs à toute transaction: Atomicité. Dans une transaction concernant au moins deux informations discrètes, soit toutes les informations sont validées par un «commit», soit aucun ne l’est. Cohérence. Une transaction crée un nouvel état de données valide, ou en cas d’échec, remet toutes les données dans leur état initial. Isolement. Une transaction en cours et non encore validée doit rester isolée de toute autre transaction. Durabilité. Les données validées sont enregistrées dans le système de manière à ce qu’elles restent disponibles dans leur état correct même en cas de panne et de redémarrage du système. Le concept ACID est défini dans la norme ISO/CEI 10026-1:1992, section 4. Chacun des attributs peut être évalué par rapport à un point de référence. En général, la mise en oeuvre de ce concept incombe au gestionnaire ou au superviseur de la transaction. Dans un système distribué, elle peut être garantie par une validation en deux phases (2 PC, ou «two-phase commit»), qui implique que soit toutes les parties prenantes s’engagent à valider la transaction, soit aucune, auquel cas, celle-ci est annulée par un «rollback».
