Definition any antigenic specificity defined by the unique sequences (idiotopes [ IATE:1685130 ]) of the antigen combining site Reference The Dictionary of Cell & Molecular Biology > John Lackie > idiotype, http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/dictionary/ [31.8.2009]
Comment Thus anti-idiotype antibodies combine with those specific sequences, may block immunological reactions, and may resemble the epitope to which the first antibody reacts.

Definition antigenic determinant (epitope) [ IATE:1073785 ] which is unique to a single clone of cells and is made up of amino acids within the variable (V) region of an antibody [ IATE:1073776 ] or T-cell receptor [ IATE:1221832 ] that reacts with an anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] Reference IUPAC Glossary of Terms used in Immunotoxicology http://old.iupac.org/reports/provisional/abstract11/templeton_prs.pdf [20.9.2011]
Comment The idiotope forms part of the antigen [ IATE:1503455 ] binding site. Any single immunoglobulin [ IATE:1224959 ] may have more than one idiotope. Idiotopes are also associated with the antigen binding sites of T-cell receptors [ IATE:1221832 ] . They are the epitopes [ IATE:1073785 ] to which an anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] or T-cell [ IATE:1431862 ] binds. The anti-idiotopic region of the anti-idiotype antibody [ IATE:1073784 ] may mimic the antigenic determinant (epitope) [ IATE:1073785 ] binding characteristics of the antigen [ IATE:1503455 ] without sharing any sequence homology.
