Definition analysis of cell-free maternal and fetal DNA in the mother’s blood as a prenatal test for Down’s syndrome Reference COM-EN, based on:Antenatal Results & Choices (ARC) (UK charity helping parents and professionals through antenatal screening and its consequences) > Tests explained > Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for Down’s syndrome (also known as cfDNA screening), http://www.arc-uk.org/tests-explained/non-invasive-prenatal-testing-nipt [4.4.2017]
Comment Although this test is not diagnostic, large-scale studies show that the test has a detection rate of over 99%. So it is currently a very sensitive screening test for Down’s syndrome, and can also look for Edwards’ and Patau’s syndrome. It is a non-invasive procedure with no accompanying risk of miscarriage.Reference: Antenatal Results & Choices (ARC) (UK charity helping parents and professionals through antenatal screening and its consequences) > Tests explained > Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for Down’s syndrome (also known as cfDNA screening), http://www.arc-uk.org/tests-explained/non-invasive-prenatal-testing-nipt [4.4.2017]
