Definition "specific habitat for 'chemosynthetic communities' found at mid-ocean ridges, volcanic arcs and back-arc spreading centres or on volcanic hotspots, where magmatic heat sources drive the hydrothermal circulation and cause a seepage of various fluids from the seabed" Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: - European Commission. DG ENV. Correspondence dated 5.10.2022- Dr. Susan L. Woodward. 'Hydrothermal Vent Communities' (5.10.2022). Department of Geospatial Science, Radford University, Radford- UN. 'Chapter 45 - Hydrothermal Vents and Cold Seeps' (5.10.2022) from II - Marine Ecosystems and Habitats"
Comment "At both vents and 'seeps', complex structures are created by animals, but the most extensive and enduring substrata are large sulfide chimneys at vents and extensive pavements of carbonates at seeps. These surfaces are often colonised by “background” fauna, which use them for attachment substrata, shelter, and access to food via grazing or through position in the current."
