Comment "An aviary house is a construction with thermal insulation and forced ventilation [ IATE:1357405 ] and either natural or artificial light. Houses can be combined with a free range and an outside scratching area. Birds are kept in large groups and enjoy freedom of movement over the entire house area over multiple levels. The housing space is subdivided into different functional areas: feeding and drinking, sleeping and resting, scratching and egg-laying area. The fact that the birds can use several levels allows for higher stocking densities compared to the commonly used floor regime (deep litter [ IATE:1077147 ]): up to 9 birds per usable m2 or up to 18 birds per m2 of ground space. Houses can accommodate up to 80 000 birds. Droppings are removed by manure belts or collected in a manure pit [ IATE:1255154 & IATE:326557 ].Reference: European Commission. Joint Research Centre.
