river basin

Definition area of land from which all surface run‑off flows through a sequence of streams, rivers and, possibly, lakes into the sea at a single river mouth, estuary or delta Reference "Directive 2000/60/EC establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy"
Comment "A river basin can also more generally be understood as an area of land from which all surface run‑off flows through a sequence of streams, rivers and, possibly, lakes into any terminal recipient at a single river mouth, estuary or delta, rather than just the sea. The slightly more restrictive definition above, however, comes directly from the Water Framework Directive. While water in a ‘catchment area’ can flow into any one water body (which can be as small as a stream), a ‘river basin’ as defined in the Water Framework Directive denotes a much more specific concept that usually covers a larger area. It puts more emphasis on a particular type of terminal body (i.e. all run-off flowing into the sea from a single river mouth, estuary or delta)."
