Definition complex biogenic structure with vertical relief <0.5 m formed by successive generations of bivalves settling out and growing on top of one another Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: Ian Michael McLeod, Philine S.E. zu Ermgassen, Chris L.Gillies, Boze Hancock, Austin Humphries. Comment The term “bivalve reefs” generally applies to habitats with significant vertical relief (> 0.5 m; Beck et al., 2009), whereas “bivalve beds” have a lower relief (sensu Coen and Grizzle, 2007). In both cases, the structures formed tend to accrete through time, as shell matter is deposited at rates greater than those lost to sedimentary dynamics (Mann et al., 2009).
