    stem cell
    en
Definition undifferentiated (i.e. unspecialised) cell of a multicellular organism which, by means of cell division, sometimes after long periods of inactivity, is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type, and from which certain other kinds of cell (i.e. tissue- or organ-specific cells with special functions) arise by differentiation Reference "COM-EN, based on:- 'stem cell' (noun) in 'Oxford Dictionary of English'. Ed. Angus Stevenson. Oxford University Press (OUP). 2010. Oxford Reference Online. OUP. DGT, http://www.oxfordreference.com/views/ENTRY.html?subview=Main&entry=t140.e0812710 [3.8.2011]- 'I. Introduction: What are stem cells, and why are they important?' in 'Stem Cell Basics', US National Institutes of Health Stem Cell Information, http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/basics1.asp [3.8.2011]"
Comment "Stem cells are the very early cells that can develop into almost all other types of cell and tissue. They occur in the early (five-day) embryo when it is a tiny ball of about 100 cells before it implants in the uterus (embryonic stem cells or ""ES cells""). They also occur in significant numbers in some tissues in the developing fetus and in umbilical cord blood at birth. They can also be found in some adult tissue, e.g. bone marrow, but they can be difficult to isolate, being present in very small numbers.Because of their ability to differentiate into so many different cells and tissues, stem cells hold out exciting prospects for the development of new cell-based therapies. They are already used for some treatments of cancers (bone marrow stem cells) and in early clinical trials in Parkinson's disease (fetal stem cells). The hope is that tissues derived from stem cells will provide a limitless supply of material to treat currently-incurable diseases and injuries.Reference: 'What are Stem Cells?' in UK Department of Health, UK Stem Cell Initiative (UKSCI), http://www.dh.gov.uk/ab/UKSCI/DH_096121 [2.8.2011]See also:embryonic stem cell [ IATE:1036294 ]somatic/(adult) tissue stem cell [ IATE:3537001 ]"

Comment Regardless of valve type, all stem-actuated control valves require some form of seal allowing motion of the stem from some external device (an actuator ) while sealing process fluid so no leaks occur between the moving stem and the body of the valve. The general term for this sealing mechanism is packing.
