    Comment Avant la célébration du mariage, l'officier de l'état civil procède à une publication par voie d'affiche énonçant les prénoms, noms, professions, domiciles et résidences des futurs époux, ainsi que le lieu où le mariage sera célébré (art. 63 code civil). Cette publication par l'apposition d'une affiche à la porte de la mairie du lieu de mariage a pour but essentiel de permettre aux tiers de signaler un éventuel empêchement au mariage. L’affichage doit être maintenu pendant 10 jours et le mariage ne peut être célébré avant le 10ème jour de la publication. Le mariage doit être célébré dans l’année qui suit l’expiration du délai de 10 jours. Il peut y avoir dispense de publication pour causes graves, non spécifiées par la loi (art. 169, premier alinéa, code civil). Les trois cas les plus fréquents sont le mariage in extremis lorsque l'un des futurs époux est mourant, l'accouchement si imminent de la future épouse que l’enfant naîtrait probablement avant l’expiration du délai de 10 jours et le départ forcé de l'un des conjoints (par ex à la guerre).
