    Comment Not to be confused with hibernation, which refers to a specific form of overwintering which involves the animal lowering its metabolism to a point where it uses very little energy. Overwintering occurs in insects, birds, plants and plant pathogens, although the two terms are very often used interchangeably. Insects can overwinter as larvae, nymphs, eggs or pupae.
