- Definition BST is a genetically engineered hormone which increases milk yield in cows. Of the two variant spellings of this term which are current in English "somatotropin" seems to be preferred in chemical and veterinary dictionaries while "somatotrophin" is used in the most recent Community legislation (e.g. Council Decision of 25 April 1990, OJ No L 116/90, p. 27) and is the form adopted by the manufacturers of the substance.
