Definition fertilising product 1 aimed at correcting soil acidity, and containing oxides, hydroxides, carbonates or silicates of the nutrients calcium (Ca) or magnesium (Mg) 1fertilising product [ IATE:3567753 ] Reference Proposal for a REGULATION laying down rules on the making available on the market of CE marked fertilising products and amending Regulations (EC) No 1069/2009 and (EC) No 1107/2009, COM/2016/0157 final - 2016/084 (COD), CELEX:52016PC0157/EN
Comment It has the double function of bringing the pH of the soil to around the optimal value of 6-7 while providing calcium and magnesium. Due to the plant materials residues or for environmental reasons the soils tend to become more acidic over time. Liming materials 'neutralise' the soils. They are by nature calcium or magnesium hydroxidic compounds, and on top of lowering the acidity they also provide calcium and magnesium, two important secondary nutrients (primary nutrients being nitrogen, phosphorus, potash). The typical natural liming material is called limestone. Reference: European Commission. DG GROW
