    Comment See the definition of driftnet in Council Regulation (EC) No 809/2007 amending Regulations (EC) No 894/97, (EC) No 812/2004 and (EC) No 2187/2005 as concerns drift nets CELEX:32007R0809/EN . Driftnets are particularly dangerous when they become "ghost nets" that have been abandoned or lost by fisherman. Since the nets are made out of highly resistant nylon, they can linger in the environment, entangling marine life for months. The Commission wants to prohibit the use of any kind of driftnet for fishing in all EU waters, and has proposed refining the definition of a driftnet.
