- Definition temporary halt in hostilities by mutual consent of the opposing parties, usually in a specific geographic area, typically to enable activities unrelated to the conflict, such as evacuating the wounded, burying the dead, or exchanging prisoners Reference "Council-Terminology Coordination, based on:- 'truce' (5.3.2025), UNTERM- Sassòli, M., Bouvier, A., Quintin, A., Grignon, J., How does law protect in war?, ICRC, Geneva, 2014: Glossary A To Z - 'Truce' (5.3.2025)- From Ceasefires to Pauses: Shedding Light on the Lexicon of War, (5.3.2025)Better World Campaign (BWC), 11 May 2023"
- Comment "The term ‘truce’ implicitly suggests that a general or permanent termination of hostilities is unlikely.1 Ceasefires are similar in meaning to truces, as both seek to halt violence for a designated period. However, ceasefires are typically more formal, binding agreements that may be part of a larger negotiated settlement. By contrast, truces are often informal, arranged by the parties themselves, and may come and go throughout a conflict.2, 3 According to some sources cessation of hostilities is considered more formal than a truce, but unlike a ceasefire, is nonbinding. A cessation of hostilities means one or both sides have announced plans to suspend fighting, which may signal the early stages of broader peace negotiations.3"
