Definition a continuous band that encircles the rim of a wheel and forms a tread that rolls on either a road, a prepared track, or the ground Reference """tire"", Encyclopædia Britannica on line, http://www.britannica.com/technology/tire#ref117797 [12.1.2016]"
Comment "Free-moving vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, buses, bicycles, and airplanes need more friction to turn, climb, accelerate, and brake, so these vehicles use rubber tires, which provide both high friction and some cushioning ability. Rubber tires are of two types:1. solid, or cushion, tires1, in which the rubber portion functions to carry the load, absorb shocks, and resist cutting and abrasion;2. pneumatic tires2, in which the load is carried and the shocks are absorbed mainly by the compressed air that fills the tire. Pneumatic tires are now used for almost all free-moving vehicles because of their greater cushioning ability and other advantages. Solid rubber tires are now used only on industrial and farm carts and on military vehicles, applications where tires are liable to be cut or pierced.1 2IATE:14264722<<<<<>;; IATE:3567669"

Definition tire1 designed to be filled with air Reference """pneumatic tire"", Glossary, Michelin, Home > Tires 101 > Glossary, http://www.michelin.ca/tires-101/tire-basics/glossary.page [14.1.2016]"
Comment "1 IATE:1218679 The pneumatic tire is designed to provide a flexible cover with an impermeable lining to contain and restrain the compressed air. This cover is provided with a rubber tread portion that is designed to withstand the cutting and abrasive wear of road contact and to protect the tire against puncture and loss of air. Such a structure has, as distinct from a solid rubber or cushion tire, no capacity in itself either to carry load or absorb shocks. It is entirely dependent on the contained compressed air to enable it to function. ""tire"", Encyclopædia Britannica on line, http://www.britannica.com/technology/tire#ref117797 [12.1.2016]"
