    Definition "any antibiotic [ IATE:1098823 ] which has a β-lactam ring [ IATE:1141310 ] in its molecular structure" Reference "COM-EN, based on: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta-lactam_antibiotic [20.3.2018]"
Comment "The classes of β-lactam antibiotics include: penicillins [ IATE:1450504 ], cephalosporins [ IATE:1361346 ], monobactams [ IATE:1453308 ] and carbapenems [ IATE:3536654 ]. All have a four-membered beta-lactam ring as part of their molecular structure. Beta-lactam antibiotics function by interfering with the growth of the cell walls of multiplying bacteria. Bacteria become resistant to these antibiotics by producing beta-lactamases, enzymes (such as penicillinase) that disrupt the beta-lactam ring. To counteract this, beta-lactamase inhibitors (e.g. clavulanic acid) may be added to beta-lactam antibiotics. For example, co-amoxiclav (Augmentin) is a mixture of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.Note reference:: 'beta-lactam antibiotic' Concise Medical Dictionary. Oxford University Press (OUP), 2010.
