Definition "limestone deposited during the Sarmatian Stage in a region having a connection at that time to the north of the Black Sea, anciently known as Sarmatia" Reference COM-EN
Comment 'Sarmatic'/'Sarmatian', when used as a geological descriptor, specifies a time period (the Sarmatian Stage) and a connection to the region of Sarmatia north of the Black Sea, anciently known as Sarmatia. Some limestone deposits in Austria are described as Sarmatic because they were laid down during the Sarmatian Stage, when the Paratethys Sea existed, stretching from north of the Alps over Central Europe to the Aral Sea in Central Asia, thus having a connection to the area subsequently referred to as Sarmatia. Sarmatic deposits are often defined by the mollusc fauna they contain.
