- Definition Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOCs): A class of emissions which includes a wide range of specific organic chemical substances. Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (NMVOCs) play a major role in the formation of ozone in the troposphere (lower atmosphere). Ozone in the troposphere is a greenhouse gas. It is also a major local and regional air pollutant, causing significant health and environmental damage. Because they contribute to ozone formation, NMVOCs are considered "precursor" greenhouse gases. NMVOCs, once oxidized in the atmosphere, produce carbon dioxide. - Comment Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a large group of gases and easily vapourisable liquids, including various groups of organic (carbon-containing) chemicals. Most are colourless and odourless. Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) describes this group excluding the particular case of methane.
