cluster | disease cluster | cluster of cases | outbreak cluster
    en
Definition collection of multiple cases of a disease that occur so closely together in space and/or time as to arouse suspicion that this is not a chance occurrence but has a cause that should be investigated Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:- ""cluster"" (7.12.2023) noun. A Dictionary of Public Health. Ed. John M. Last, Oxford University Press, 2007. Oxford Reference Online. OUP. - outbreaktools.ca > background > 'Outbreak Identification' (7.12.2023)"
Comment 1) Epidemiologists and statisticians seek to distinguish between a chance cluster and an epidemic, for instance clusters of uncommon or rare childhood malignancies that may be associated with environmental contamination by carcinogenic chemicals or radioactive waste products from nuclear power plants.2) A cluster of two or more cases linked in time and place is therefore the starting point for epidemiological and environmental investigations of potential links that may eventually lead to the detection of an outbreak associated with an environmental source of infection.3) Disease clusters differ from sentinel events. Sentinel events are occurrences of unexpected diseases or disorders that are known to result from specific, recognized causes of likely relevance to the situation or setting.
