- Definition "1.Tetraethyl is a controversial process chemical added to petrol to increase its octane rating. As such, it is discharged in aerosolised form from vehicle emissions. It has been estimated that in 1986 some 300 tonnes per annum of lead were released in this form in the US. The policy approach in EC has been to control the lead content of vehicle fuel, particularly following the 1981 reform report of Professor P. J. Lawther, ""Lead and Health"" (HMSO and the 1983 report of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution on Lead in the Environment." Reference 1.GRAHAW;
