    Comment L'agent causal est un bacille à Gram-négatif, immobile, non encapsulé et non sporulé de la famille bactérienne des Burkholderiaceae, anciennement appelé Pseudomonas mallei, et lié sur le plan évolutif à l'agent de la mélioïdose, Burkholderia pseudomallei. Selon sa forme, l'infection se caractérise par des lésions nodulaires et ulcératives de la peau (forme cutanée - voir farcin [ IATE:1245884 ]), des muqueuses surtout nasales ou des poumons.
