    Comment An electronic system that guides a pilot along a precise approach path to the runway on landing. The localizer beam gives directional guidance with respect to the runway centre line; the glide slope beam give the angled glide path to the runway. In addition, runway marker beacons transmit vertical beams to indicate the aircraft's distance from the runway. The ILS instrument on board shows the pilot whether or not he is deviating from the correct glide path and brings the aircraft down to the appropriate altitude on the threshold of the runway. Aircraft equipped with a blind landing system use ILS in conjunction with an automatic pilot and a radio altimeter to make fully automatic landings. Reference: IATA Compendium
