Les huiles minérales sont largement utilisées dans l'industrie mécanique (comme lubrifiant ou huile pour les moteurs) mais également dans l'industrie cosmétique, où elles remplissent les fonctions d'émollient (pour assouplir la peau) et d'agent occlusif (pour empêcher le dessèchement). On les retrouve sous les appellations Petrolatum, Paraffinum liquidum (Paraffine liquide) ou Mineral Oil pour les versions fluides, Cera microscristallina (cire microcristalline), Petrolatum jelly (gelée de pétrole), polyisobutylène (caoutchouc butyle) ou encore Ozokerite et son dérivé, la Céresine (Ceresin) pour les versions solides ou semi-solides.2. Elles sont également utilisées comme additif alimentaire.
