Definition material with the ability to spontaneously ignite, without the influence of heat or fire, in air at temperatures of 54°C or below Reference University of Minnesota. Environmental Health & Safety. ‘Pyrophoric Cyhemicals Guide’, http://www.dehs.umn.edu/PDFs/Pyrophoric_Chemicals_Guide.pdf [28.7.2015]
Comment Pyrophoric gases, pyrophoric liquids and pyrophoric solids all share the property of spontaneous ignition. Pyrophoric gases, such as silanes which are a nonmetallic hydride, can ignite immediately upon exposure to air. Pyrophoric gases are stored in compressed gas cylinders. Pyrophoric liquids such as tert-butyllithium are often metal- (alkyls, aryls, vinyls, carbonyls or hydrides). Pyrophoric liquids are often sold and stored in flammable hydrocarbon solvents, such as ethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran (THF), pentane or heptane. Pyrophoric solids such as lithium are often alkali metals and stored under kerosene or oil.The test methods are laid down in Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 laying down test methods pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), CELEX:32008R0440/EN See also:- pyrophoric [ IATE:1211709 ]- pyrophoric solid [ IATE:3501904 ]- pyrophoric liquid [ IATE:3501900 ]
