Definition "use of a mechanical ventilator to deliver a controlled pressure of a gas to assist in ventilation or expansion of the lungs, thereby providing an increased tidal volume for patients with a variety of pulmonary conditions" Reference "COM-EN, based on:Handelsman, H., ‘Intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) therapy’ (10.8.2020), Health Technology Assessment Reports, 1991;(1):1-9, Abstract."
Comment "With the IPPV principle, the patient’s respiratory system is integrated into the ventilator system. A positive pressure is applied intermittently to the patient’s airway. When the airway pressure is temporarily higher than the alveolar pressure, fresh gas is pushed into the lungs, the process of inspiration. When the airway pressure is lower than alveolar pressure, the gas is expelled out of the lungs, the process of expiration. Both inspiration and expiration are regulated by the operator’s settings.IPPV is the common principle of most modern ventilators, whether invasive or non-invasive."
