Definition in this chromatographic technique, the packing is nonpolar and the solvent is polar with respect to the sample. Retention is the result of the interaction of the nonpolar components of the solutes and the nonpolar stationary phase. Definition reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with a ternary mobile phase Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: P. Jandera. 'PREDICTIVE CALCULATION METHODS FOR OPTIMIZATION OF GRADIENT ELUTION USING BINARY AND TERNARY SOLVENT GRADIENTS' (8.2.2024) Journal of Chromatography 485 (1989) 113"
Comment There are two types of ternary gradient chromatography defined by Jandera as ternary solvent-strength and combined selectivity-solvent-strength. In the case of the former, the ratio of the concentrations of two organic modifiers is kept constant; whilst the sum of the two concentrations is changed (i.e. the solvent-strength increases). In the latter case the ratio of the two organic modifiers and the sum of their concentrations changes simultaneously during gradient elution.
