Definition nonrepetitive DNA that lies between transcribed sequences and has no apparent function except to separate other genetic elements Reference "'spacer DNA' (24.3.2021). Oxford Reference"
Comment Spacer DNA is non-transcribed nucleotide sequences between genes (IGS) in a cell. In the rDNA, there are spacers within (internal transcribed spacers, ITS) and between gene clusters (external transcribed spacers, ETS). These were thought of earlier as not-transcribed tracts but actually they represented very short transcripts.
