Definition "soil characterised by a clay-size-particle content of 30 percent or more by mass in all horizons (layers) of the upper half-metre of the soil profile, by cracks at least 1 cm (0.4 inch) wide extending downward from the land surface, and by evidence of strong vertical mixing of the soil particles over many periods of wetting and drying" Reference "COM-EN, based on: Encyclopaedia Britannica > Science > Earth Science, Geologic Time & Fossils > Earth Sciences > Vertisol (14.10.2020)"

Definition "type of heavy clay soil with a high proportion of swelling clays, having an effective base saturation of ≥ 50% at least between 20 and 50cm from the soil surface" Reference "COM-EN, based on:'Eutric' in Canarache, A, Vintila, I and Munteanu, I (2006), Elsevier’s Dictionary of Soil Science: In English (with definitions), French, German and Spanish, Burlington, San Diego and London;andWorld reference base for soil resources 2014 (fao.org)"
Comment This type of soil forms deep wide cracks from the surface downward when it dries out, which happens in most years. Alternate swelling and shrinking of expanding clays results in deep cracks in the dry season. The name Vertisol (from Latin vertere, to turn) refers to the constant internal turnover (churning) of soil material. Found in depressions and level to undulating areas, mainly in tropical and subtropical, semi-arid to subhumid and humid climates with an alternation of distinct wet and dry seasons. The climax vegetation is savannah, natural grassland and/or woodland.
