Definition any small readily diffusible intracellular mediator, whose concentration inside the cell changes rapidly on receptor activation, and which thus regulates the activity of other target signalling molecules Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:Kimball's Biology Pages, Second Messengers (27.4.2020)"
Comment The term second messenger was coined upon the discovery of these substances in order to distinguish them from hormones and other molecules that function outside the cell as “first messengers” in the transmission of biological information. Many second messenger molecules are small and therefore diffuse rapidly through the cytoplasm, enabling information to move quickly throughout the cell.

Definition "single-stranded RNA which contains only exons and is complementary to one of the DNA strands of a protein-coding gene" Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:1) Biology Online. Comment For most eukaryotic genes (and some prokaryotic ones), the initial RNA that is transcribed from a gene's DNA template must be processed before it becomes a mature messenger RNA (mRNA) that can direct the synthesis of protein.
