Definition number of independent pieces of information that went into calculating an estimate Reference "'Degrees of Freedom: What are they?' (9.2.2021) Statistics How To"
Comment It’s not quite the same as the number of items in the sample. In order to get the df for the estimate, you have to subtract 1 from the number of items. Let’s say you were finding the mean weight loss for a low-carb diet. You could use 4 people, giving 3 degrees of freedom (4 – 1 = 3), or you could use one hundred people with df = 99.

Definition in the field of robotics, the number of independent variables in a system Reference "EP-EN, based on: Learnaboutrobots > Robotics Glossary http://www.learnaboutrobots.com/glossary.htm [10.01.2017]"
Comment Each joint in a serial robot represents a degree of freedom. The number of independent directions or joints of the robot (R15.07), which would allow the robot to move its end effector through the required sequence of motions. For arbitrary positioning, 6 degrees of freedom are needed: 3 for position (left-right, forward-backward, and up- down) and 3 for orientation (yaw, pitch and roll).
