- Comment Two persons cannot enter into a contract of marriage or civil partnership if they are within the prohibited degrees of relationship. Older legislation distinguishes relationships by consanguinity and relationships by affinity. Both terms are still used in academic texts. The 2004 Act specifies prohibited relationships without using consanguinity as the common denominator of them. A blood relationship, or relationship by blood can be a relationship of the whole blood (siblings with two shared parents) or a relationship of the half blood (siblings with one shared parent)
