    bio-based carbon content
    en
Definition "amount of bio-based carbon contained in a product measured over the product's overall organic or total carbon content, expressed as a percentage" Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination and COM-EN, based onTÜV AUSTRIA Belgium, Bio-based content vs Bio-based carbon content. Information Document 536 (EN) – 19.10 (15.3.2023)."
Comment European standard EN 16640 specifies the method for the determination of bio-based carbon content in bio-based products using the 14C method. The analytical test methods specified in this European standard are compatible with those described in ASTM D 6866-12. However, it should be noted that following the ASTM D 6866-12 standard, the bio-based carbon content is expressed as a fraction of the organic carbon, thereby excluding any inorganic (fossil) carbon present in the product. According to EN 16640, however, the bio-based carbon content is expressed by a fraction of sample mass or as a fraction of the total carbon content.
teneur en carbone biosourcé | contenu en carbone biosourcé
    fr

    carbon-negative bio-based economy
    en
Comment The bio-based economy relies on sustainable, plant-derived resources for fuels, chemicals, materials, food and feed rather than on the evanescent usage of fossil resources. The cornerstone of this economy is the biorefinery, in which renewable resources are intelligently converted to a plethora of products, maximizing the valorization of the feedstocks. Innovation is a prerequisite to move a fossil-based economy toward sustainable alternatives, and the viability of the bio-based economy depends on the integration between plant (green) and industrial (white) biotechnology. Green biotechnology deals with primary production through the improvement of biomass crops, while white biotechnology deals with the conversion of biomass into products and energy. Waste streams are minimized during these processes or partly converted to biogas, which can be used to power the processing pipeline. The sustainability of this economy is guaranteed by a third technology pillar that uses thermochemical conversion to valorize waste streams and fix residual carbon as biochar in the soil, hence creating a carbon-negative cycle. These three different multidisciplinary pillars interact through the value chain of the bio-based economy.

    en
Definition plastic made wholly or partially from renewable biological resources Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: European Commission. Environment. 'Biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics' (13.3.2023)"
Comment "There is widespread confusion among consumers about these different types of plastics. The umbrella term “bioplastics” is often used to describe very different materials, and the terms “biobased”, “biodegradable” and “compostable” may be misleading. The term “bioplastics” should ideally be avoided as it is often used to refer to both bio-based and biodegradable plastic. It is preferable to use ""bio-based plastic"" if it is a plastic derived from biomass or ""biodegradable plastic"" if it biodegrades. Both categories overlap but there are also bio-based plastics that are not biodegradable as well as biodegradable plastics that are not bio-based.Biobased plastics are fully or partially made from biological resources, rather than fossil raw materials. They are not necessarily biodegradable or compostable. It is important to examine the full life cycle of biobased plastics to ensure that they are beneficial to the environment beyond the reduction in use of fossil resources. This includes changes in land use. 'Biodegradable plastics' biodegrade in certain conditions at their end of life. Compostable plastics – a subset of biodegradable plastics – typically decompose in industrial composting facilities, and first need to be collected. Biodegradable and compostable plastics may be made from biological resources or fossil raw materials. These plastics should be used when it is not possible to reduce, reuse or recycle, in line with the circular economy and waste hierarchy principles."
