Definition any biodegradable polymer derived from lactic acid, some forms of which are used in a variety of medical applications and as a replacement for conventional petroleum-based plastics Reference COM-EN, based on: ‘polylactic acid’ (2.12.2020) Oxford Dictionaries, Oxford University Press
Comment It resembles clear polystyrene, provides good aesthetics (gloss and clarity), but it is stiff and brittle and needs modifications for most practical applications (i.e. plasticizers increase its flexibility). It can be processed like most thermoplastics into fibres, films, thermoformed or injection moulded. It is used for compost bags, plant pots, diapers and packaging.Reference: Design inSite > Materials > Plastics > Biopolymers > PLA – Polylactide (2.12.2020)
