- Comment Before the reform of 2019, this was the 3rd of the country's 3 units. There were 16 communities. The other sub-national units are: region (IATE:3531633 ) and locality (IATE:3531651 ). Local councils took on the responsibility of communities, in accordance with Act No. XIV of 2019 (1.4.2020).

- Comment Avant la réforme territoriale de 2019, certaines localités maltaises étaient subdivisées en «communautés» (villages ou quartiers d'une certaine importance), gérées par un comité de gestion formant une subdivision du conseil local. L'île comptait 16 communautés de ce type. Aujourd'hui, Malte ne compte plus que deux échelons territoriaux: la région et la localité. Les localités ont repris les compétences des communautés.
