dissolving pulp | dissolving cellulose
en
Definition chemically refined, bleached pulp with a very high cellulose content (usually 90% or more) Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination and COM-EN, based on:- Dan Cavallari, 'What Is Dissolving Pulp?' (19.4.2023), About Mechanics, 26 March 2023.- Wikipedia > Dissolving pulp (19.4.2023)"
Comment Most dissolving pulps are made from softwoods which are woods from conifer trees. Some dissolving pulp is made from hardwoods, though, and an increasing amount is made from non-wood plant fibres.Once dissolved, it can be spun into textile fibres (viscose or Lyocell), or chemically reacted to produce derivatised celluloses, such cellulose triacetate, a plastic-like material formed into fibres or films, or cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose, which is used as a thickener. A small proportion of dissolving pulp is used to produce filter papers and specialty papers.
