- dissolving pulp | dissolving cellulose
- en
- Definition chemically refined, bleached pulp with a very high cellulose content (usually 90% or more) Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination and COM-EN, based on:- Dan Cavallari, 'What Is Dissolving Pulp?' (19.4.2023), About Mechanics, 26 March 2023.- Wikipedia > Dissolving pulp (19.4.2023)"
- Comment Most dissolving pulps are made from softwoods which are woods from conifer trees. Some dissolving pulp is made from hardwoods, though, and an increasing amount is made from non-wood plant fibres.Once dissolved, it can be spun into textile fibres (viscose or Lyocell), or chemically reacted to produce derivatised celluloses, such cellulose triacetate, a plastic-like material formed into fibres or films, or cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose, which is used as a thickener. A small proportion of dissolving pulp is used to produce filter papers and specialty papers.
