- Comment The term is not recommended, because it tends to suggest that such practices originate and persist almost exclusively within non-western cultural traditions. It may also suggest that, in western societies, practices harmful to girls and women are not practised, or even that their existence in western societies is overlooked by international human rights treaty bodies. Thus, the term ‘harmful practices’ is the preferred term.

- Comment Le terme n'est pas recommandé car il sous-entend que de telles pratiques trouvent leur origine et persistent uniquement dans les cultures non-occidentales. Il peut également suggérer que, dans les sociétés occidentales, les pratiques préjudiciables pour les femmes et les hommes n'ont pas lieu, voire que les organismes de suivi des traités internationaux relatifs aux droits de l'homme ne tiennent pas compte de leur existence dans le monde occidental. Dès lors, le terme «pratiques préjudiciables» doit être privilégié.
