- Nóta "The rights of the elderly stem from the more general principles of dignity and non-discrimination. The revised European Social Charter of 1996 recognises and protects their right to social protection. Action to combat all forms of discrimination, including discrimination on grounds of age, is a part of the principles of the European Community since the Treaty of Amsterdam (Article 13 EC). The Charter on the Fundamental Social Rights of Workers adopted on 9 December 1989 sets out the right of elderly persons to sufficient resources for a decent standard of living, by virtue of the principle of dignity.
